Myth Busters: Winter Sleep Edition

Myth Busters: Winter Sleep Edition

As the days shorten and the nights grow colder, some of us may crave a little extra sleep. But before you burrow under the covers for a winter hibernation, let’s clear up some misconceptions. Contrary to popular belief, winter doesn’t magically alter our sleep needs, and some cosy habits might not be doing your sleep quality any favours. Here, we debunk some common winter sleep myths to help you ensure a restful season.

Myth: We need more sleep in the winter.

While some people may feel more sluggish in the winter due to less sunlight exposure, there’s no scientific evidence to suggest our sleep needs actually increase.  Sleep needs are more consistent throughout the year, although some people may naturally vary slightly by season.

Myth: A colder bedroom makes for better sleep.

While most people prefer a slightly cool room for sleep (around 18.3 degrees Celsius), excessively cold temperatures can disrupt sleep. Our bodies naturally cool down as we fall asleep, and being too cold can interfere with this process.

Myth: Hibernation is the same as winter sleep in humans.

True hibernation is a physiological state seen in some animals where their body temperature drops significantly, their metabolic rate slows down, and they become inactive for extended periods. While some animals do become less active in the winter, this is not true hibernation and their body temperature remains relatively constant. Humans do not hibernate.

Myth: Drinking alcohol before bed helps you sleep better.

While alcohol may make you drowsy initially, it actually disrupts your sleep cycle later in the night, leading to fragmented sleep and making you feel less rested in the morning.

Myth: Carbs before bed make you sleepier.

While a light snack before bed can be helpful for some people, heavy meals, especially those high in carbs or sugar, can disrupt sleep. These types of foods can cause blood sugar spikes and dips which can interfere with sleep quality.
